Adding a furry member to your family is a big commitment. It is one that takes total dedication and a lot of planning. Here is a list of items to gather before their big arrival.
1. Crate
Its important to have a crate ready to go when you bring your new furry friend home. Crates are a great tool to use to potty train puppies. They also provide security and safety for rescue pups.
2. Leash & Collar/Harness
Your new pup is going to want to explore the neighborhood! Collars are your best bet if your pup has longer hair, or you plan on leaving it on for extended periods of time. If they tend to be a little more rambunctious and pull on the leash opt for a harness. A harness will be more comfortable for them by reducing strain on their neck and back. Harnesses also discourage pulling from your pup making them more well behaved walking partner.
3. Food & Water Dish
Once you pick out the best food option you are then going to need to find a food and water dish. Stainless steel is best for all dogs because they are non toxic, durable, and they do not absorb bacteria like some plastics or lower quality ceramic and pottery. If your pup is a larger breed consider an elevated bowl. This will cause less strain on your dogs neck.
4. Brush
Depending on their breed dogs should be brushed 1-3 times per week. This will remove hair mats, prevent tangles, and help keep their coat clean. Petco has some great tips to help you pick out the brush best for you new dog.
